should have seen me when I fired off my volvo 765 TD for the first time. Run or put it out, that is the question. I shut her down before getting a piston to the brain luckily

That's why its a good idea to have a piece of at least quarter inch steel that's big enough to go over the main intake when starting a mechanically injected diesel. Usually something went wrong in the fuel pump.

because he knows all you have to do is block the intake.

or an oil leak in the turbo is even worse. If it is an IP problem it is not really a bad runaway unless it is leaking more fuel internally, because it will still be metered, even if at full throttle. It is the unmetered stuff like an oil leak you have to really worry about.

Or stall it if a manual. Not an option on a locomotive unfortunately.

I guess on the Detroit Diesel 2 strokes (71 series, 92 series, etc.) the fuel injection unit, they call it the "rack," tends to get stuck occasionally.

same thing with the VW D20/24's, the slide gets stuck full on. Scary shit. That is why I always recommend a Diesel Purge on a closed loop with the engine running on it at 100% concentration. Sure it would work wonders on that GMC too
